No More Pain

In the medical field, much progress has been made to improve one’s state of health. Magazines and newspapers contain articles to excite their readers with promising new discoveries and cures. There are many answers to questions about different illnesses that can be found on the Internet.

With all that genius being tapped, an absolute cure for the common cold, HIV Aids and most types of the “Big C” is yet to be discovered. The word ‘cancer’ with its many names and descriptions still strikes fear into the heart. It has found its ominous way into virtually everyone’s life, whether through a loved one, a friend or a member of the family, or- by a “personal encounter”. Although ‘No More Pain’ centers on the lesser-known cancer called Mesotheleoma, it can be compared with stories of other forms of cancer.

‘No more Pain’, like my first book ‘Chasing Rainbows,   was written mainly in the first person, told by ‘Rita Ponti’ to the author Bea Ellemcy of her “journey” with her husband ‘Vito’, through the months prior to his death.

It is mostly an inspirational narration of the story and is interspersed with light-hearted diversions, namely an ‘Introduction’ to each of its four parts, and also quotations, verses, poems and prayers. The ‘Foreword’, touching on the delicate subject of euthanasia gives a good description of Rita’s approach to this final phase of her life with Vito, and her encouragement to her family to walk the road with them.

When Doctor Smit (A General Practitioner) gave his written review of ‘No More Pain’ he said ‘Excellent reading! There are still lessons to be learned!’ He added that apart from the ordinary reader, it could well be used by professors of psychiatry with their students; on the subject of ethics, and that it would be an excellent text book for university students and for training hospitals to “get acquainted” with such a family’s experience.

Providentially, through many unexpected delays in this book’s completion, a man’s view of a family’s experience with suffering was given to me through the death of his wife who succumbed after a long battle with cancer. This gentleman is now my husband-I call him ‘Malcolm’ in my story.

Finally, a twist of fate provided a bizarre but touching, end to ‘No More Pain’. A further delay meant that another part could be added; that of the sudden death of our dear friend, Wendy N. who died within a short period after diagnosis, through the same form of cancer as Vito: Mesotheleoma.

Although this book could be of interest for everyone, my wish is that many, through reading it, will find courage and inspiration in facing the subject of cancer and terminal illness, whether as a patient, a member of the family, a friend or  caregiver looking after such a patient and as Doctor Smit says; 'anyone in the medical profession.'
